Former Nixon, Clinton adviser: ‘We’re in impeachment territory now’

A former adviser who served four U.S. presidents said reports that President Donald Trump attempted to shut down the FBI’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn enters “impeachment territory.”

David Gergen, who advised former presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton while they faced impeachment, said it appeared that Trump attempted to influence the FBI’s probe into Flynn during a conversation with former FBI director James Comey.

“It looks like he was trying to impede the investigation. He was using his power to do that, and when James Comey didn’t go along with him, when he wasn’t his boy, he fired him,” Gergen said Tuesday night on CNN.

He suggested that it appeared that this alleged incident may land the president in “impeachment territory.”

“After watching the Clinton impeachment I thought I’d never see another one, but I think we’re in impeachment territory now for the first time,” he told Anderson Cooper.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz on Tuesday demanded the FBI hand over all documents detailing communications between Trump and Comey.
