Cummings demands Coats, Rogers memos on Trump conversations

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee is asking two of the nation’s top spies to turn over any documentation of their conversations with President Donald Trump relating to the FBI or congressional investigations into Trump’s ties to Russia.

Rep. Elijah Cummings’ request follows a Washington Post report that Trump asked the two officials — Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers — to publicly deny that there is evidence showing the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to sway the presidential election in Trump’s favor. Coats and Rogers refused to comply, the Post reported.

Cummings on Tuesday sent the pair letters asking that they provide by June 2 "all documents, communications, memoranda, notes, and recordings referring or relating” to conversations with Trump or White House aides about the Russia investigations.

A Democratic aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Cummings’ staff requested that Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) sign onto the letter, but that Chaffetz declined. Chaffetz’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Chaffetz previously sent a request for memos by former FBI Director James Comey detailing his interactions with Trump. The FBI last week declined to provide the memos yet, saying the bureau needed to first consult with Robert Mueller, the new special counsel overseeing the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s election meddling.
