Trump claims tax bill that doesn’t yet exist is ‘moving along’ in Congress

President Donald Trump claimed Thursday that tax legislation is advancing through Congress — even though no such bill yet exists.

“Our tax bill is moving along in Congress, and I believe it’s doing very well,” Trump said Thursday afternoon in a Rose Garden speech announcing that the U.S. will pull out of the Paris global climate pact.

Although no such legislation exists, Trump said, “I think a lot of people will be very pleasantly surprised.”

“The Republicans,” he continued, “are working very, very hard. We’d love to have support from the Democrats, but we may have to go it alone. But it’s going very well.”

The Senate is working on a health care bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. But even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged late last month, “I don’t know how we get to 50 votes. Lawmakers are expected to tackle tax reform after health care, although Congress faces a number of looming fall deadlines, including funding the government by October.
