President Donald Trump had a few words for former FBI Director James Comey ahead of his highly anticipated congressional testimony later this week: "I wish him good luck."
Trump offered the message in response to shouted questions from the press as he met with congressional leaders to discuss his legislative priorities, including repealing Obamacare and delivering on tax reform.
Comey, whom Trump abruptly fired last month, is expected to be asked about reports that Trump pressured him in the Oval Office to back off a probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. He is due to testify on Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee in both an open session and a closed session.
While the White House has given various explanations for why Trump fired Comey, the president himself pointed to the FBI’s sprawling probe into ties between Trump’s campaign and Russian leaders as one of the reasons.
After Trump fired Comey, he allegedly told the Russian foreign minister and ambassador during an Oval Office meeting that Comey was a "nut job" and that firing him relieved pressure on his presidency.
