House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was upgraded to a fair condition on Thursday, though he still requires careful monitoring, according to MedStar Washington Hosptial.
He was previously downgraded to a serious condition after entering the intensive care unit July 6 due to an infection.
“Congressman Steve Scalise remains hospitalized at MedStar Washington Hospital Center,” the MedStar update read. “Today, he underwent surgery for the management of deep tissue infection related to his bullet wounds. He is in fair condition, and will require careful monitoring to see if and when further interventions are necessary."
Scalise sustained the injuries June 14 while practicing at a Northern Virginia baseball field for the June Congressional baseball game. His detail and other security at the field shot and killed the gunman — who hit four people — at the scene.
